Christmas Lights

As my son just turned two, I was very excited to see his little face light up when discovering Christmas lights for the first time. It was the first year where he would really be aware of Christmas lights and would be old enough to appreciate them. As we got back from the Vietnamese Phở Restaurant, we made a detour through our neighborhood at night to admire all the decorated Mc Mansions. He enjoyed the lights, pointed at them and stated the obvious toddler observation by shouting " lights!" but as we drove down further, he seemed to exaggerate his reactions in order to please us and we could hear his tiny voice mumble nonchalantly "wow". Us, parents, were making seagulls squawks as we approached every single new lit house, and I would hurt my neck looking back to see our son's reactions. He had his fingers in his mouth and would glance through the window just to look away immediately. It was already getting old for him. I don't know why my husband and I still persisted on trying to show him our amazement for those lights, as we wanted to create such a magical moment. Then, today, we drove by another house lit from the chimney to the driveway. Us parents again exploded into a seagull's concert and we heard a little sigh in the back saying " Hmmm Mmmm, lights". We both laughed so much imagining he must have been thinking to himself " It must be a grown up thing..."
