Surviving off mushrooms and cultivating our own corny hope...

Every time we watch a Korean or Japanese movie, I have the urge to stuff my face with some deluxe instant Ramen noodles. It is almost midnight and I am craving for some instant black bean Ramen noodles. I never had these before, but thanks to this multiple award-winning Korean movie Castaway on the Moon, these little radioactive noodles have a total new meaning to my taste buds.

Komar asked me what I wanted to watch tonight, and here was my response: "I feel like watching something that will restore my amazement in humanity. Something that will showcase our brilliance, as humans. A movie that is grand, a masterpiece, in the same lines as Amelie, Forrest Gump, or The Matrix. Something new. Something wow. Something that will change my perspective on the world."
And Komar responded: "Just that, huh...". And there he was, flipping through our Netflix, when he selected this one. "Ask and you shall receive" he would tell me, if he could predict the future and the outcome of the movie. I was blown away. There was nothing cheesy or cliché about this film. It was a true gem and a subtle love story that respected the audience's intelligence and did not need to hammer every single line to us. I love movie revelations like these.

This is the story of this sad guy who failed a suicide attempt and turned castaway in the Han River and a girl who is addicted to the Cyberworld and hasn't gone out of her house for years. They both give hope to each other and overcome their restraints. This movie treats the common ways we fall in love in a non-common way.

 It made me think of the Little Prince quote that says "It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.” ― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince.

Who said TV was junk food for the brain?! Unless all you watch is Jersey Shore or those type of shows...

We just discovered Portlandia over the week-end. My mind got blown away by this astounding witty and clever show mocking all kind of hipsters. Their acting and parody are SO accurate. I could recognize all my hipster friends though their dialogue. I absolutely LOVE this show and cannot believe it took us this long to tune in. For those who's been watching it, that episode where they put a bird on everything gave me chills..as I discovered, as much as I enjoyed mocking hipsters, that I was one myself at some levels. Yikes! He he he. I also never realized how much Montreal ad Portland's liberal mentality were similar... This show is brilliant!

500 Days of Summer & Pancake Break-Up

What happens when a person who doesn't believe true love exists meets a young man who falls in love with her? You can dream all you want but don't be surprised if there is a clash. I liked how this movie shows how one can distort their reality to believe in true love when all the signs were right there showing the relationship would be doomed to failure...

A great indie romantic comedy drama film about love, soul mates, disillusions, expectations, and denial. This movie was refreshingly honest and utterly charming. The soundtrack is a must have with a nice, hip sound.

Paper Heart & Garlic Love :P

Yesterday was our eighth wedding anniversary. We didn't have a sitter on that Tuesday night so we stayed home and are planning to go out on the week-end instead. As we were discussing all our past memories built over the years, after eleven years of being in love with each other, we were browsing through Netflix and stumbled upon this indie movie called Paper Heart.

It was such pleasant surprise! The movie embodied every essence of what I want to transmit and all the vocations that this blog has.

This movie is about Charlyne Yi, playing as herself, who embarks on a quest across America to make a documentary about the one subject that she doesn't fully understand: Love.

I won't give you any spoilers but there was a quote I really liked in this movie: "Everybody wakes up with a bad breath"... It's just unfortunate that the story is fictional, after all those rumors about Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi dating in real life. They are JUST friends. Well...their chemistry was truly believable. :)

Mouth Watering :P

I'm not sure if I have already told you how much of a huge Joss Whedon fan I am. When I heard that he recommended this unknown actor, Chris Hemsworth to play the lead role in Thor, I knew I was in for a nice treat! Joss Whedon is responsible for the discovery of Nathan Fillion and David Boreanaz, who were also unknown before but both so talented and charismatic actors. I surely wasn't disappointed when my dear husband and I went to see Thor on a movie date night. Joss Whedon couldn't have recommended a better actor for this role. Chris Hemsworth has all the star quality to be catapulted to the A-list celebrity.

Out of all the Marvel heroes, Thor is the sexiest to me. He is also the first Marvel hero I would consider dating or even marrying. All the other ones have too much baggage, need for vengeance or have creepy mutant attributes. Thor embodies the ultimate classic female fantasy: a sexy fish out of water (like Tarzan or Mowgli from the Jungle Book), a little boy wanting to impress his father mixed with an impulsive, macho, alpha caveman who could just swoop you away. Yet he acts like a true gentleman and leader at the same time since he is a future king who has strong and godly super powers. Wow. Again, thank you Joss for this discovery. I totally understand why you picked him for this role. Looking forward to seeing more movies starring Chris Hemsworth. :)

3-Iron

This one is part of my top 10 favorites in foreign movies.

Directed by Ki-duk Kim and starring Seung-yeon Lee, Hyun-kyoon Lee, this movie is about a guy who breaks into empy houses while people are gone on vacations and he lives there for a couple of days. He doesn't steal anything and even fixes things...

It is a fairly odd love story and the movie direction is so brilliant that words become nearly obsolete. I'm sure if you flipped through the movie script, there would be only a couple of pages filled with text. I could say it is almost a silent movie, but a true cinematographic masterpiece. :)

Priceless (Hors de Prix), starring Audrey Tautou, and Gad Elmaleh.

Audrey plays the role of a young girl named Irene who's idea of a prince is a rich old man, so she cruises the French Riviera in search of one to marry. She would only fall for wealthy men and

thinks that she's going to find her happiness in this world of diamonds and restaurants and is ready for anything to get it.
Even though the subject is pretty classic, I really loved the way the story unraveled and the direction. A great evening spent with my Ben and Jerry ice cream tub and flannel pajamas. Hoping you'll enjoy this movie as much as I did. :)

Timer, a charming indie movie that I highly recommend if you haven't seen it yet. A fresh twist to the concept of love and Soul Mates.
